If you find yourself near to Sheffield, I can strongly recommend a visit to ‘The Round Building‘ at Hathersage. The round building is a converted gas works where the David Mellor cutlery is manufactured. We were lucky enough to be shown round by David himself many years ago, but I believe there are tours available. The building itself is worth the visit just from the architectural point of view.
It is set below Froggat Edge, a dramatic destination for walkers. We had just finished camping and walking a small section of the nearby Pennine Way with its’ spectacular views of the beautiful countryside when we visited last summer.
Next to the factory are the David Mellor kitchen shop ( where we sell our pots ), museum and refectory – all worth visiting. The museum is a well presented collection of David Mellors most well known designs – not just cutlery, and includes exhibits of his sons work as well.
Save time and room for some of their cake – it’s well worth it. I had the carrot cake – fantastic.
